Understanding the Building as a System: From Design to Use

This presentation will focus on the building envelope as a system, and provide an overview of the most important challenge: how to keep water out and heat in as the mechanisms that allow water to infiltrate and heat to exfiltrate are examined. From the design stage through to building occupancy - how are the elements of the building envelope serving to maintain an ideal indoor environment, reduce energy consumption, and increase the lifecycle of the building?

An Overview of Rating Systems and the Effect the Building Envelope has on a Green Building

Are green building rating systems changing the mainstream practice of building design and construction? Are they pushing us towards a culture of sustainable buildings and are they able to meet the challenge of climate change? What's beyond LEED® and how do other rating systems compare? This presentation will look at Green Building rating systems, the criteria on how the different systems are positioned, their impact on the professional practice and the construction industry, and how architects should be focusing on the performance of the building envelope as a path to energy conservation and healthy buildings.

Moisture Management and the Building Envelope
Moisture damage in a building can result in decay and mould which can lead to structural damage or health issues for tenants.  How does water migrate through the building envelope  to result in such destructive consequences? Learn how good construction practice coupled with a regular building envelope investigation and maintenance program will improve the long-term performance of your building envelope and lead to cost effective maintenance solutions.

, Associate, Building Science and Restoration, Read Jones Christoffersen
