9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
Building Science: The Building as a System

"Five Fundamental Changes to Construction Practice"

The session answers the question "why we don't build the way we used to" and what that means.  How have insulation, low perm materials, engineered wood, steel studs and three dimensional air flow networks altered the building enclosure and mechanical systems landscape.

 Joe Lstiburek,
Principal, Building Science Consulting

10:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.  Morning Refreshment Break

10:45 a.m. – 11:50 p.m.
Net Zero Buildings

In the design of the envelope/façade of a building, the designer decides to either work with or against the environment.  The envelope of the building is one of the most critical factors in environmental response design.  Properly addressing the performance of the façade/envelope is the proactive approach, the more the building requires engineering systems is the reactive approach.  Human thermal comfort and the energy consumption of the building is greatly influenced by the performance of the façade and envelope systems.  This presentation further explains the importance of the façade/envelope performance in a Net-Zero Building.

Albert Bicol, Partner, Cobalt Engineering

12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

CONCURRENT SESSIONS

(Select A1, A2, or A3)

1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

SESSION A1

Myths and Realities about Roof Design, System Performance, Maintenance, Repair and Re-Roofing

In every facility there are a number of components within the structure which are considered prime with respect to maintaining status quo in the functionality of the facility’s utilization. No one component in the entire facility receives less attention than the roof.

This presentation will provide insight into the critical areas that need to be considered when dealing with the service life of your roof.

Key points that will be discussed in this presentation include:

  • Overview of roofing system an insulation types.

  • Green Roofing Considerations

  • Preventative Roof Maintenance Considerations

Zen Szewczyk, National Director, Marketing & Sales IRC  Group Inc

 SESSION A2

High Performance Building Envelope: Looking Beyond High-Performance Claddings

Owners want glass buildings. Glass creates challenges in providing comfortable, energy efficient buildings.  This session will discuss strategies for tuning cladding systems for different elevations and illustrate how cladding choices can be made to optimize comfort and performance.

Doug Webber, Sustainable Practice Leader, Halsall Associates

  SESSION A3

Slab on Grade Construction and Moisture Management

Slab Flooring Problems

Avoiding flooring failures with concrete slabs at grade, below grade and on elevated steel pan construction.  Repairing flooring failures associated with high ph and low perm finishes.  Resilant floors and wood systems will be covered.

Joe Lstiburek, Principal, Building Science Consulting

2:00 p.m. – 2:15 p.m.  Afternoon Refreshment Break

CONCURRENT SESSIONS

(Select B1, B2, or B3)

2:15 p.m. – 3:15 p.m.

SESSION B1

HVAC Systems & New Technologies: Understanding and Managing the Conflict Between Green Architecture, IAQ and Energy Efficiency

Discover the latest technologies for advanced, efficient, heating systems. Find out about two-stage furnaces, condensing boilers, combination space/water heating systems, integrated systems that include ventilation and even ultra-high efficiency fireplaces, and more! What about tankless water heaters?  Not only the benefits, but the problems or drawbacks that exist with some newer systems will be discussed, while the best new systems will be emphasized. The inefficiencies of most commercial heating systems will be mentioned, along with solutions. You will also hear about impending technologies for homes and buildings which can generate electricity and integrate with renewables.

Skip Hayden, Senior Research Scientist, and Deputy S&T Director, Integrated Energy Systems, at CETC-Ottawa, NRCan.

SESSION B2

Mould, Moisture & Related Problems

Perhaps the most significant statement ever made about building science was that “Except for structural failure, about 90% of all building problems are related to moisture in some way”.  This presentation will examine the various mechanisms by which moisture can damage buildings, their occupants and their wallets.  And, more importantly, techniques to reduce these problems will be discussed.  Both new and existing buildings will be considered.

Gary Proskiw, President, Proskiw Engineering

SESSION B3

Cost Effective Building Envelope Maintenance Strategies

This session will outline measures to be taken to effectively tighten the building envelope of existing buildings. Considerable experience has shown that tightening these buildings judiciously can be extremely cost effective.  Case studies, methodology and cost justification will be discussed to cover all aspects of the building envelope including the top, bottom, vertical shafts, the side walls and, last but not least, the issue of compartmentalization. Issues such as smoke, odour, dirt and bug control frequently become part of the justification for doing this work.   Window retrofit measures including low-e film, weatherstripping replacement, interior sull sash, insulating glass unit replacement, as cost-effective alternative s  to replacing windows will also be discussed.

Tony Woods, President, Canam Building Envelope Specialists Inc.

3:30 p.m.- 4:15 p.m.

Panel Discussion

A discussion on key mistakes and remedies for the design, construction, retrofit and maintenance of the building envelope.
